Decarbonising Ireland's Maritime Industry: Assessing Technology Options Workshop
The IMDO is hosting a workshop on “decarbonisation technologies for the maritime sector in the Atlantic Area” as part of the SMARTDEC porject. This event will take place in The Conrad Hotel, Dublin, on the 19th November 2024 from 10.00am to 1.00pm.
Shadow

The maritime transport sector plays a pivotal role for the economy and competitiveness of the Atlantic area, yet it remains a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Achieving the ambitious goal of reducing these emissions requires collaborative efforts and concrete actions. To this end, this workshop will bring together technology providers, developers, and end-users to discuss the primary focus of innovation and development needs towards neutrality in the near future.

There will be two panel sessions on the day, one technology focused panel which will explore digitalisation, OPS, alternative fuels and the direction these technologies are taking and the challenges in their implementation e.g. costs, availability, limited users etc. The second panel will include ports and shipping companies and will cover what technologies are being explored to help meet targets in the short term, what future technologies are looking challenging & their barriers to adoption, and where are the main obstacles to decarbonising maritime and what are the suggested solutions.

Panel 1: Technology

Moderator: Edel O’Connor, IMDO

Panellists:

Dr. Michael Scriney, Assistant Professor at Insight SFI Research Centre, DCU

SMARTDEC is a European Project co-funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area that aims to create and develop an Atlantic network of the maritime transport sector to provide the tools, knowledge and structure needed to rapidly meet the challenge of reducing the pollutant emissions of the waterborne transportation in the Atlantic Area (AA). This joint initiative gathers key actors from different regions in Ireland, France, Portugal & Spain that will be organised as hubs with a quadruple helix approach in which research & academia, policy makers, society and the industry (clusters, SMEs & start-ups) will collaborate to develop common strategies to achieve the decarbonisation of the maritime transport sector. SMARTDEC will boost the innovation capacity of decarbonisation of the maritime transport sector by promoting the adoption of promising technological solutions currently available and validated to match with relevant end-users. https://smartdec.eu/
