Our Ocean Wealth Summit 2018
The 5th Our Ocean Wealth Summit took place in Galway on June 28th and 29th 2018
Our Ocean Wealth Summit, in association with PwC, is an ambitious event with an exciting programme of market-leading speakers, innovators, entrepreneurs and experts from industry, academia, research, policy and government.
This year the Our Ocean Wealth Summit extended across two days, with a packed programme of presentations as well as panel discussions, interactive sessions and networking events. The Galway Docks hosted the event and it attracted more than 500 national and international delegates from across the marine sector.
The Summit’s keynote speaker was Mary Robinson, the 7th President of Ireland and the first female to hold this office. In 2010 she established The Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice, a centre for thought leadership, education and advocacy on the struggle to secure global justice for people vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
The IMDO ran a session on Maritime Commerce with an expert panel of speakers including, Mark Hutchinson (Professor of Finance, University College Cork), Catherine Duffy (Partner, A&L Goodbody), Conor Mowlds (Chief Commercial Officer, Port of Cork), Timothy Loy (Director of Transport Finance, PwC) and Will Purcell (Vice President, Aviation Finance, Macquarie Bank). The panel discussed the opportunity for an International Shipping Services Centre (ISSC) in Cork City, similar to the IFSC in Dublin and the Aviation leasing industry in Ireland.
The diverse programme at the Summit reflected the strong collaboration between Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM), Bord Bia, Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland, Fáilte Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI) and the Marine Institute with individual sessions addressing environmental, economic and societal opportunities and challenges to creating a sustainable ocean economy for Ireland.
