Data Scientist Position

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) invites applications for the recruitment of a qualified applicant for the Data Scientist position at the Maritime Digitalisation Centre (MDigiC) of CMMI, situated in Cyprus. The employment period is a fixed-term two-year contract, with the possibility of renewal. 

Company and Group Description

The CMMI is a non-profit, research, innovation and technology development organisation established in Cyprus, supported by EU funds via the Teaming program, as well as the Government of Cyprus and established industry stakeholders. The CMMI pulls together expertise from local universities and industry and international partners.

Within MDigiC, our portfolio of current and forthcoming projects spans a diverse array of domains and methods. More relevant to this position are the following projects:

(i) Developing advanced tools for marine spatial planning to support sustainable ocean resource management.

(ii) Developing models for maritime traffic analysis to improve vessel estimated time of arrival and predict port congestion.

(iii) Utilising satellite or aerial imagery for improved earth observation and remote sensing in the context of various marine and maritime applications.

Data Scientist candidate profile

We seek to recruit a data scientist with the desire and ability to undertake a range of multidisciplinary projects that will support research work at the CMMI. At this early developmental stage of the CMMI, there is a great incentive to collaborate towards forging the direction of the Institute and to capitalise on partnerships with local and international CMMI partners.

Data Scientist job description

The successful candidate will:

Research & Development
  • Conduct research within funded projects by implementing and evaluating state-of-the-art methodologies.
  • Propose ideas for novel research themes and hypotheses with the potential of translating them into publications and securing funding.
  • Test hypotheses and evaluate scientific data from various sources, revisiting and adjusting working hypotheses as suitable.
  • Collaborate on projects with partners from other research institutions, universities, and the industry.
Publication & Dissemination
  • Author research articles for peer-reviewed journals and conferences, as well as book chapters.
  • Present papers at international conferences, and other venues to disseminate research findings.
  • Collaborate in the preparation of scientific reports, including those for project deliverables.
Management & Coordination
  • Manage personal academic research and associated administrative tasks.
  • Liaise with funding bodies and provide information to project stakeholders.
  • Represent the research group at both internal and external meetings and seminars, either with other members of the team or alone.

Data scientist qualifications

  • Holds a BSc or MSc or PhD in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and proficiency in at least one programming language (preferably Python).
  • Acquainted with relevant machine learning libraries and proficient in data visualisation techniques and tools.
  • Strong understanding of traditional statistical methods, e.g. statistical tests such as ANOVA, and strong interest in learning about more advanced statistical methods (e.g. nonparametric Bayesian methods as well as Sequential Monte Carlo methods).
  • Experience working with a variety of data sources and the ability to clean and validate data, improving data quality. The ability to select, fine-tune, and train machine learning models is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will be considered as a strong advantage.

Full-stack developer job description

Successful candidates will contribute to CMMI projects, assist in the preparation of reports and deliverables, contribute to scientific reports, and develop software tools. Successful candidates are expected to have skills within the field of Computer Science. Exceptional candidates with a large interest in software engineering and full-stack development will also be considered.

Full-stack developer responsibilities
  • Design and implement highly scalable, robust, and secure software solutions.
  • Help maintain code quality, organization, and automation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define, design, and launch new features.
  • Take ownership of the software development lifecycle, from ideation to deployment.
  • Stay up to date with emerging technologies and make recommendations on adoption where appropriate
Full-stack developer skills
(A) Must Have
  • Strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns.
  • Strong proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., JavaScript, Python).
  • Experience with modern web development frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue, WebComponents).

  • Proven experience as a full-stack developer.
