In all, it is expected that 28 cruise ships will visit Port of Waterford, gateway to Ireland's South East, calling at Belview and Dunmore East, representing a 33% increase on last year. This is a great boost to the local and regional economy.

Overall, unitised volumes, which encompasses both RoRo and LoLo markets, were below trend in Q4 2023, and have stagnated throughout the year. This is not surprising, given the difficult economic environment within which Irish importers and exporters have traded in recent years. However, unitised traffic has also avoided sharp declines. When the recent challenges are considered, the theme of unitised traffic at ports on the island of Ireland instead becomes one of resilience in 2023.

Monday, 29 January 2024: Ireland’s largest bulk port Shannon Foynes and the Port of Rotterdam – Europe’s largest port – have signed an agreement with a view to developing a supply-chain corridor for exporting green fuels into Europe produced from the west of Ireland’s limitless wind resource.

The agreement will focus on market and trade development for vast volumes of green hydrogen and its derivatives produced at the planned international green energy hub on the Shannon Estuary.

It is estimated that cruise tourism contributes €17 million to the local economy, with Cruise Tourism onshore spending averaging at €81 per passenger and €29 per crewperson. 

Marking the beginning of the cruise season, the MS Sirena, operated by Oceania Cruises, is scheduled to arrive at the Port of Cork on April 1st, 2024. With a length exceeding 180 meters and a capacity to carry over 850 passengers, the MS Sirena sets the stage for what promises to be a thriving year for Cork's cruise industry.
