The report details the progress that has been made in the implementation of the actions of the Road Haulage Strategy in the first year since its publication in December 2022. The report was launched by Minister Chambers at a meeting with stakeholders of the haulage sector to discuss challenges and opportunities in the sector, review progress made towards implementation of the strategy actions and to seek views on the priorities identified for 2024.

Monday, 29 January 2024: Ireland’s largest bulk port Shannon Foynes and the Port of Rotterdam – Europe’s largest port – have signed an agreement with a view to developing a supply-chain corridor for exporting green fuels into Europe produced from the west of Ireland’s limitless wind resource.

The agreement will focus on market and trade development for vast volumes of green hydrogen and its derivatives produced at the planned international green energy hub on the Shannon Estuary.

It is estimated that cruise tourism contributes €17 million to the local economy, with Cruise Tourism onshore spending averaging at €81 per passenger and €29 per crewperson. 

Marking the beginning of the cruise season, the MS Sirena, operated by Oceania Cruises, is scheduled to arrive at the Port of Cork on April 1st, 2024. With a length exceeding 180 meters and a capacity to carry over 850 passengers, the MS Sirena sets the stage for what promises to be a thriving year for Cork's cruise industry.

The Partnership Board governing the Co-Programmed Partnership on Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport in the framework of Horizon Europe organised its fifth meeting. During this meeting, the Partnership Board, amongst others, adopted the updated Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, detailing the roadmap to achieve the objectives set. The Board adopted the Additional Activities Plan 2024, outlining the investments foreseen by the broader waterborne transport sector. 

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine will host an information webinar on Wednesday 10 January from 10.00-11.30 titled "Are you prepared for the UK’s New SPS Import Requirements from 31 January 2024?" 

The objective of the webinar is to share the latest information available on the changes to the UK’s import regime and provide updates on the Department’s preparations to support the sector in meeting these new UK requirements. Registration is available here.
