Maritime Policy
Effective, efficient maritime policy development is of paramount importance to Ireland both at a national and international level. The maritime sector has undergone a number of challenges over recent years and the Irish government has implemented a range of initiatives to support the development and growth of the Irish maritime sector.

Harnessing Our Ocean Wealth – An Integrated Marine Plan for Ireland highlights the potential benefits and economic impact the blue economy can have for Ireland. The Irish Maritime Development Office has contributed to the formation of a national development plan for the marine sector and specifically the maritime services industry.
Shortsea shipping involves the movement of cargo and passengers by sea between ports situated in geographical Europe or between those ports and ports situated in non-European countries having a coastline bordering Europe. The Irish Maritime Development Office is the designated Shortsea Promotion Centre in Ireland for shortsea shipping in line with EU policy and is a member of the European Shortsea Network (ESN), since March 2001.
The Irish Maritime Development Office plays a vital advisory role to government and industry. Operating under the auspices of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, we have contributed to the creation of a cohesive development strategy for national ports.
Maritime Legislation has both a national and international dimension to ensure that the maritime industry adheres to a clear, structured approach for both the safe transport of goods and people. Responsibility for enforcement of international maritime legal standards on a national level lies with the offices of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
