The IMDO’s primary goals are to connect the maritime industry stakeholders with essential funding opportunities and to provide expert guidance on this funding.
The project aims to create an interactive platform for exchange between all stakeholders in the maritime transport sector, including solution developers (start-ups, SMEs, entrepreneurs), researchers, academics and end-users, as part of the decarbonization of transport and port activities. The aim is to stimulate the adoption of new technologies and define a harmonised strategy for the Atlantic seaboard.
Actions will focus on three main areas:
- Develop a network of Atlantic hubs to support the adoption of technologies and transnational cooperation to improve the innovative performance of the maritime transport sector and stimulate its decarbonization
- Support the shipping sector to reduce CO2 emissions and find efficient, clean technologies to develop the industry in the years to come
- Share best practices, exchange ideas and solve problems together on the Atlantic seaboard.
The project will contribute to a sustainable and competitive maritime transport sector that will reinforce the economic development of the Atlantic Region and the development of a regional value chain for decarbonisation
Its primary objective is to accelerate the decarbonisation of waterborne transport in Europe by fostering synergies between national and regional research programmes, in line with the objectives of the Zero-Emission Waterborne Transport (ZEWT) partnership.
The ZEWT partnership aims to achieve zero emissions in the waterborne transport sector by 2050. Reaching this target requires research, development, innovation and investment to address climate and environmental challenges while ensuring the safe deployment of new technologies. The EU-funded MarLEN project will support this mission by enhancing the European Research Area in waterborne research through the coordination of national and regional maritime research programmes aligned with the ZEWT partnership. The project fosters transnational cooperation by facilitating information exchange among national programme owners, implementing joint initiatives and building on insights from previous efforts. Additionally, the network of maritime ministries and funding bodies will be expanded by integrating new organisations from partner countries.
CMMI was established by the CMMI/MaRITeC-X project as a “Centre of Excellence in Marine and Maritime Research, Innovation and Technology Development” and has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation Programme under Grant Agreement No. 857586 and matching funding from the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) was established in April 2019 and it is a Centre of Excellence for marine and maritime research, innovation and technology development. It is based in the city of Larnaca in Cyprus, an island located on the crossroads of three continents and major maritime routes with a proud maritime tradition and a commendable maritime industry. CMMI has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme and matching funding from the Cyprus Government.
CMMI’s vision is to drive sustainable Blue Growth by addressing the needs of industry and society within the spectrum of the marine and maritime sectors. It has ten Research and Innovation Centres that are involved in marine technology, marine robotics, maritime digitalisation, marine observation, marine and coastal ecosystems, marine biotechnology and aquaculture, the maritime human element, marine cultural heritage, marine and maritime policies and regional cooperation.
As an advanced partner of the MaritecX / CMMI project, the IMDO and Marine Institute have a central role supporting the development of CMMI through leveraging our expertise in the following areas:
- Delivery of a national programme for growth and development of the blue economy;
- - Stakeholder engagement across government, industry and academia;
- - Brokering partnerships and building innovative ecosystems;
- - Economic analysis and reporting;
- - Supporting the development of educational and training programmes;
- - Supporting funding consortia

The IFSTL project is a significant development in improving connectivity and digitalisation in Ports between Ireland, France and the UK. The project will enhance trade facilitation and provide opportunities for economic growth and developments within the regions.
Project Outcomes
• A set of improved of improved IFSTL logistic processes; The development of a set of improved logistic processes that will be used on the MoS route Dublin – Cherbourg. These processes will be designed to be usable elsewhere, enabling other Ports and Stakeholders to benefit from the projects innovations.
• A set of existing and validated IFSTL software modules; The development of a set of software modules that will be used on MoS Route Dublin – Cherbourg and elsewhere. These modules will be tested and validated ensuring they are reliable and effective.
• Preparation of IFSTL documents; To prepare technical and functional specifications, tender documents and Cost Benefit Analysis documents to enable works. These documents will be essential for the successful implementation of the project and will ensure that all stakeholders are aligned with the project goals.
• The IFSTL Masterplan; The development of the IFSTL Masterplan to include policy recommendations for exploitation on other MoS routes. The masterplan will outline the strategic direction of the project and provide a roadmap for the projects expansion to other ports and routes.

EALING Action number 2019-EU-TM-0234-S is a 36 months long Connecting Europe Facility project aiming at proposing a common EU harmonised and interoperable framework for the transition to electrification for at least 16 EU maritime ports in different sea basins.
16 EU Ports belonging to different sea basins - Mediterranean, Black Sea and Atlantic Sea – are the pilot sites for the studies defining the technical, legal and regulatory framework to accelerate the implementation of OPS solutions. 22 partners, including IMDO, representing the maritime community with Port Authorities, consulting companies in power system, energy and engineering, logistics, research and development bodies, IT suppliers. EALING Studies are the first phase of the Global project “European flagship action for cold ironing in ports” (EALING) that aims at accelerating the effective deployment of OPS solutions in the EU maritime ports, including the Action “EALING Works Valenciaport” and a further phase to implement at least 30 installations in at least 16 EU ports of the Consortium.
