Port of Waterford is Granted Maritime Area Consent (MAC)

Fri, 07/11/2025 - 23:35 /

Port of Waterford has officially been granted a Maritime Area Consent (MAC) by MARA - the national body overseeing maritime area development rights. With this consent, it now means we can apply for permission to develop new port infrastructure.

What this means for the region:

✅ Waterford can be a national gateway for offshore wind logistics: The MAC positions the Port as a staging ground for projects like the Tonn Nua Offshore Wind Farm and future developments in the Celtic Sea.

✅ Job creation across maritime, engineering, and supply chain sectors: Local companies stand to benefit from construction, maintenance, and service contracts linked to offshore renewables.

✅ Infrastructure investment with long-term economic value: With consent secured, applications can advance for new port infrastructure to serve this growing industry.

✅ Climate and energy security leadership from the South East: Offshore wind is central to Ireland’s 2030 climate targets - and Waterford is now part of that solution.

The MAC marks a major milestone - not just for the Port, but for the entire region.

From trade to renewables, Waterford continues to adapt and lead after 1111 years as Ireland’s maritime gateway.
